What Is Hyaluronic Acid — and Why Is It in Your Stem Cell IV?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan — a large sugar molecule — found throughout your body. It’s concentrated in your joint fluid (synovial fluid), skin, eyes, and connective tissue, where it serves as the body’s primary lubricant, shock absorber, and hydration manager.

A single gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This extraordinary water-binding capacity is what makes it so critical for joint function, tissue integrity, and skin health.

As you age, HA production declines significantly. By age 50, your body produces roughly half the HA it did in your 20s. This loss contributes directly to joint stiffness, reduced mobility, slower wound healing, and tissue dehydration.

In our stem cell products, HA serves a dual purpose: it creates the ideal environment for MSC stem cells to survive and function, while also providing direct therapeutic benefit to your joints and tissues.

Joint lubrication — HA is the primary component of synovial fluid that cushions and lubricates every joint in your body
Tissue hydration — Binds water molecules to maintain tissue volume, elasticity, and structural integrity
Shock absorption — Acts as a cushion between bones and within connective tissue, protecting against impact
Wound healing support — Regulates inflammation and signals cells to build new blood vessels at injury sites
Stem cell environment — Creates a hydrated, protective matrix that helps MSCs survive and signal effectively after delivery

How Hyaluronic Acid Supports Stem Cell Therapy

HA isn’t just along for the ride — it plays active roles that make stem cell therapy more effective.

1

Protects MSCs During Delivery

HA creates a hydrated, protective microenvironment around stem cells during IV infusion. This helps maintain cell viability as MSCs travel through the bloodstream, improving the number of healthy cells that reach damaged tissue.

2

Supports Cell Signaling

HA interacts with CD44 and RHAMM receptors on MSC surfaces, helping regulate cell migration, adhesion, and proliferation. In other words, HA helps stem cells stick where they need to go and communicate with surrounding tissue more effectively.

3

Creates a Healing Matrix

In injection applications, HA (along with Wharton’s Jelly) provides a physical scaffold that keeps stem cells localized at the treatment site rather than dispersing too quickly. This is especially important for targeted joint and tissue injections.

4

Provides Direct Therapeutic Benefit

Beyond supporting stem cells, HA directly improves joint lubrication, reduces friction, and supports tissue hydration. Patients with arthritis and joint pain get the dual benefit of stem cell signaling plus immediate joint support from the HA component.

Why This Matters: Hyaluronic acid isn’t a filler or marketing ingredient — it’s a functional component that improves both stem cell delivery and therapeutic outcomes. It’s naturally present in the Wharton’s Jelly-based products we use, which means you’re getting it as part of a biologically complete product rather than a synthetic add-on.

Hyaluronic Acid Throughout Your Body

HA is one of the most abundant molecules in the human body. Here’s where it matters most — and what happens when levels decline.

🦵

Joints & Synovial Fluid

HA is the primary lubricant in every joint. It reduces bone-on-bone friction, absorbs shock during movement, and maintains the viscosity of synovial fluid. Declining HA levels are a direct contributor to osteoarthritis progression.

🧴

Skin & Connective Tissue

Nearly 50% of your body’s HA is in the skin. It maintains hydration, elasticity, and volume. The age-related decline in skin HA is a major factor in wrinkles, sagging, and delayed wound healing.

👁️

Eyes & Vitreous Humor

The fluid inside your eyes (vitreous humor) is primarily HA and water. It maintains eye shape, supports light transmission, and provides cushioning — which is why HA is used in eye surgery and dry eye treatments.

🦴

Cartilage & Bone

HA is a key component of cartilage matrix, providing compressive resistance and nutrient transport. In bone, HA supports the activity of osteoblasts (bone-building cells) and osteoclasts (bone-remodeling cells).

🩹

Wound Healing

During tissue repair, HA concentrations spike at injury sites where it regulates inflammation, promotes new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and helps organize the extracellular matrix for proper tissue rebuilding.

🧬

Extracellular Matrix

HA is a major structural component of the extracellular matrix — the scaffolding between cells. It maintains tissue architecture, facilitates cell-to-cell communication, and regulates how growth factors and nutrients reach cells.

Standalone HA Injections vs. Stem Cell Therapy With HA

Millions of Americans get hyaluronic acid joint injections (viscosupplementation) every year. Here’s how they compare to what we offer.

Standalone HA Injections (Synvisc, Euflexxa, etc.)

  • Lubrication only — no anti-inflammatory or regenerative signaling
  • Temporary relief lasting 3–6 months before needing repeat injections
  • Does not address underlying cartilage degeneration or inflammation
  • Single joint per treatment — $300–$1,500 per injection per joint
  • Synthetic or animal-derived HA (typically from rooster combs or bacterial fermentation)

MSC Stem Cell Therapy + HA (What We Use)

  • HA lubrication PLUS living MSCs that release growth factors and anti-inflammatory signals
  • Sustained benefit as MSCs continue signaling for weeks to months
  • Addresses inflammation, tissue environment, and cellular repair — not just friction
  • Systemic IV supports your entire body — or targeted injection for specific joints
  • Naturally derived HA from human umbilical cord tissue — biocompatible
Feature Standalone HA Injections MSC Therapy + HA
Joint Lubrication ✔ Yes — primary benefit ✔ Yes — included naturally
Anti-Inflammatory ✗ Minimal ✔ Significant — MSC-driven
Tissue Repair Signaling ✗ None ✔ Growth factors + exosomes
Duration 3–6 months typical 6–12+ months reported
Systemic Support ✗ Single joint only ✔ IV = whole body
Typical Cost $300–$1,500 per joint $1,999 all-inclusive
HA Source Synthetic / animal-derived Human umbilical cord tissue

Our Position: We’re not against HA injections — they provide real relief for many patients. But if you’re going to invest in joint treatment, we believe getting the full regenerative package (MSCs + HA + growth factors + exosomes) at $1,999 provides better long-term value than repeated HA-only injections that never address the underlying problem.

HA Is One Part of a Complete Regenerative Product

Every stem cell treatment at The Stem Cell Club includes hyaluronic acid as part of a comprehensive product — not as a separate line item.

Common Questions About Hyaluronic Acid in Stem Cell Therapy

What is hyaluronic acid and why is it in my stem cell treatment?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found throughout your body — in your joint fluid, skin, eyes, and connective tissue. It’s your body’s primary lubricant and hydrator. In stem cell therapy, HA serves multiple roles: it protects MSCs during delivery, supports tissue hydration, creates the optimal environment for cell signaling, and provides direct joint lubrication. It’s naturally present in all our products — not an add-on.
Do I need to pay extra for hyaluronic acid?
No. HA is naturally present in the Wharton’s Jelly matrix that makes up our APEX™ products. It’s included in every treatment at $1,999 — no separate charge, no upsell. If another clinic tries to sell you “HA enhancement” or “lubrication boost” as an add-on to stem cell therapy, that should raise questions about what’s actually in their base product.
I’m already getting Synvisc/gel injections. Should I switch to stem cells?
That depends on your situation, and we’ll give you an honest assessment during your consultation. Viscosupplementation (Synvisc, Euflexxa, Supartz, etc.) provides real relief for many patients by adding lubrication to the joint. However, it doesn’t address the underlying inflammation or tissue damage. If you’re finding that your HA injections are providing shorter relief periods or less benefit over time, stem cell therapy may provide more comprehensive support because it addresses inflammation and tissue signaling in addition to lubrication.
Is the hyaluronic acid in your products natural or synthetic?
Natural. The HA in our products comes from human umbilical cord tissue (Wharton’s Jelly) — the same biological source as the stem cells themselves. This is different from standalone HA injections, which are typically derived from rooster combs (avian-derived) or bacterial fermentation (synthetic). Human-sourced HA is inherently biocompatible, which is why adverse reactions are extremely rare.
Does hyaluronic acid help with conditions other than joint pain?
Yes. While HA is most known for joint lubrication, it plays important roles throughout the body. It supports skin health and wound healing, maintains eye hydration, facilitates nutrient transport between cells, and creates the extracellular matrix environment that supports tissue integrity. When delivered as part of an MSC IV therapy, HA supports the stem cells’ function systemically — not just in joints.
How long does HA last after stem cell treatment?
The HA delivered with our products provides immediate support, but your body naturally turns over hyaluronic acid within days to weeks. The key difference from standalone HA injections is that the living MSCs in our products continue to support tissue health and signaling for much longer — weeks to months. We recommend treatments every 6 months for sustained support of HA levels along with ongoing stem cell benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stem cell therapy cost in Peoria, Illinois?
At The Stem Cell Club, stem cell therapy costs $1,999 — all inclusive. This covers your consultation, premium U.S.-sourced MSC stem cells, IV or injection treatment, and follow-up care. Most Illinois clinics charge $10,000–$25,000 for comparable treatment. We’re able to offer lower pricing because we source directly from FDA-registered labs, don’t pay commission-based salespeople, and keep our overhead lean.
Is stem cell therapy legal in Illinois?
Yes. Regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy are legal in Illinois. The Stem Cell Club follows all FDA guidelines for minimally manipulated umbilical cord tissue products. Our medical team provides full physician oversight for every treatment at our Peoria clinic.
What conditions do you treat at your Peoria clinic?
Patients come to our Peoria location for knee pain, hip pain, shoulder injuries, osteoarthritis, back pain and disc issues, sports injuries, autoimmune inflammation, and general wellness and longevity goals. During your free consultation, we’ll discuss whether stem cell therapy is appropriate for your specific situation.
How long does stem cell therapy take?
The procedure takes 1–2 hours at our Peoria office. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to help maximize your results.
Why is your price so much lower than other Illinois clinics?
We source our MSC stem cells directly from FDA-registered labs — no middlemen, no brokers. We don’t have luxury waiting rooms, commissioned salespeople, or celebrity marketing budgets. Our stem cells are the same quality as $15,000 clinics; we just don’t mark them up 5–10x. We believe transparent pricing and honest care shouldn’t be the exception in regenerative medicine.
Do you accept insurance for stem cell therapy?
Most insurance plans don’t cover stem cell therapy yet, as it’s still considered investigational by many carriers. However, many patients use HSA/FSA funds. At $1,999, our pricing is often less than a typical insurance deductible — and a fraction of what most clinics charge.
When will I see results from stem cell therapy?
Results vary by person and condition. Some patients report reduced pain within the first few weeks, while others notice gradual improvement over 2–3 months as stem cells work to reduce inflammation and support healing. Most of our Peoria members repeat treatment every 6 months for sustained benefits.
